The vibrant and lively state of Rajasthan is spell binding touring destination in India. The land of Rajputs truly epitomizes the quintessence of Indian heritage and culture. Peeking into history of Rajasthan tells us that the state is the habitat of the powerful Rajputs who boast of being a group of valiant warriors and who claim their descent from the sun, the moon and the flames of a sacrificial fire, that was lit up to revive the meandering souls of early 'kshtraiyas'.

Mythological reference suggest that when Rama drew an arrow to burn the Lanka of Ravana, Gods requested him to spare life of the innocent people who came in that way. Resultantly Rama changed the course of his arrow and pointed it at a far located sea. This brought existence of Rajasthan a dry and desert region. If this is true or not is a matter of religious belief. However excavations in the Thar Desert have revealed presence of marine life in the bygone eras.

Historically speaking, Rajasthan has witnessed a long trail of events that have made its

contemporary times more astounding. Rajputs were always very brave and this paramount sense of heroism was so much imbibed by them that they often fought amongst themselves to prove their dominance. Their disintegrated rule was the reason behind their colonization by the Mughals.

Nonetheless, their sense of chivalry remained unaffected and they fought to their last breath to attain freedom of the Mughal Empire. Whenever time demanded many sacrificial rites were performed like jauhar was performed by many women when their men were defeated in any war in order to retain their dignity.

However, the Rajputs somehow tried and vanquished the Mughal rule, but this happiness

was too short-lived and soon the British arrived to the brave lands of Rajasthan. The British seduced some kings of the state to retain their independence on some economic and political conditions.

The alliance with the British rulers began the end of the Rajputs also. British had a great impact in the lives of Rajput rajas. Hence they were by then driven to some other world where heroism was subsided and merrymaking came to forefront. Consequently many kings spent their time traveling and entertaining themselves. They remained occupied with lavish games and playing polo and others alike. They did not realize that it was wrecking their kingdom. In the long run it resulted in lower literacy rate and life expectancy.

However, India gained Independence in 1947 and thereby Rajasthan also attained

Independence from the British colonization. During the time of independence the ruling party Congress was compelled to make a deal with the Rajput states to preserve their nod to become a part of new India. The then rulers of Rajasthan were nevertheless allowed to retain their titles and property holdings. But they were paid an annual stipend to commensurate with their status.

As the time progressed this also was abolished by the then Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The property rights of the rulers were sternly sequestered in 1970s.
